Dear Students and Families,
Welcome to James Irvin Education Center (JIEC), home of the Tigers. At JIEC, our goal is to create a safe and strong academic environment where all of our students believe, achieve, and succeed. As an alternative school, it is essential that we help our students return to their zoned schools on track toward making yearly progress, being promoted to the next grade level, earning a high school diploma, and being a positive and productive citizen.
In our school’s section of this planner, I have outlined ideas that parents can use to work with us to help their students reach their highest potential. Thank you for allowing us to be partners in your child’s education.

To be true partners, we all need to be on the same page . . . We spend a lot of time working to help students develop positive academic and social skills, and it takes students, parents, and teachers working together to make our system work. Our character education program consists of six core ethical values called TIGER TRAITS and is in compliance with Florida Statute 1003.42(q) as defined by the Character Counts Youth Ethics Initiative (Making Ethical Decisions, a Josephson Institute booklet).
The Six Tiger Traits are:
- Trustworthiness: Be honest. Don’t deceive, cheat or steal. Be reliable – do what you say you’ll do. Have the courage to do the right thing. Build a good reputation. Be loyal – stand by your family, friends, school, and country.
- Respect: Treat others with respect; follow the Golden Rule. Be tolerant of differences. Use good manners, not bad language. Care about others’ feelings. Don’t threaten, hit or hurt anyone. Deal peacefully with anger, insults and disagreements.
- Responsibility: Do what you are supposed to do. Persevere; keep on trying! Always do your best. Use self-control. Be self-disciplined. Think before you act – consider the consequences. Be accountable for your choices.
- Fairness: Play by the rules. Take turns and share. Be open-minded; listen to others. Realize that fairness doesn’t necessarily mean sameness. It is fair to do whatever meets the needs of each individual situation.
- Caring: Be kind. Be compassionate and show you care. Express gratitude. Forgive others. Help people in need. When someone makes a mistake or has an accident, let it go without retribution.
- Citizenship: Do your share to make your school and community better. Cooperate. Get involved in community and school activities. Stay informed; vote. Be a good neighbor. Obey laws and rules. Respect authority. Protect the environment.
